“Five years ago today we awoke to a nightmare,” said Reid. “I was on the ground in Washington that day, and saw first hand the evil, and destruction that our enemies seek to inflict. At the same time, I also witnessed the courage and resolve of our first responders and the men and women of our armed forces as they met this new challenge.”

“Our government’s most basic obligation is to protect the American people from future attacks. Because of our resolve, we have not been attacked here at home since that horrid day. This is a credit to our brave soldiers serving abroad, and our administration and law enforcement agencies here at home. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their steadfastness and courage in the job they have done.”

“Our work is not yet finished, however. Our side has to be successful 100% of the time, and the enemy only needs to be successful once to bring horror and death to our shores. We have been safe here at home up to this point because we have taken the fight to the enemy. Now in part because of our success, some are calling for us to retreat in Iraq and other battlefields in the War on Terror. I believe this would be a grave mistake. General John Abizaid said recently that if we cut and run in Iraq the terrorists will follow us home. We cannot afford this, we must make sure that we fight and win in Iraq and every battlefield in this war.”

Seventh Congressional District Candidate Nick Reid today called on 37-year incumbent Dave Obey to make his schedule public. The move comes amid reports that Obey has been campaigning in Iowa and eastern Wisconsin for other liberal democrats but has only been spotted once in the district.

“Last week Seventh District voters learned that Dave Obey has an attendance record that would catch the attention of any truant officer,” Reid said. “I think that voters in the Seventh District deserve to know where Mr. Obey has been spending his time.”

Earlier this summer Obey’s friends at the Democratic Party of Wisconsin called on gubernatorial candidate and Wisconsin Congressman Mark Green to make his schedule public. Green complied, showing that he has been able to conduct his business in Washington and run a gubernatorial campaign. Mr. Obey is not running for governor, but just last week it was reported that he had missed 34 votes already this session (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel July 27).

“Voters here in the Seventh District deserve to know where their congressman has been spending his time,” said Reid. “I challenge Mr. Obey to follow Congressman Green’s lead and make his schedule public. I think Mr. Obey owes this to his constituency.”

Nick Calls Obey Vote "Ridiculous"

Seventh Congressional District Candidate Nick Reid today called 37-year incumbent Dave Obey’s vote against the Federal Marriage Amendment “ridiculous.” The vote today marks the second time that Obey has sided with the liberal lobby on this issue instead of his constituents.

“Traditional marriage is the building block of our society and has been for thousands of years,” said Reid. “Unfortunately for the people of the Seventh District, Mr. Obey is more concerned with catering to Washington special interest groups than defending the values of our District.”

This is now the second occasion Congress has debated this measure, and in each instance 37-year incumbent Dave Obey has voted against them. This is despite the overwhelming support of the voters of the Seventh District for traditional marriage. In fact, just last month Obey shocked Seventh District residents by declaring that defending traditional marriage was “ridiculous.” (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, June 7, 2006)

“The only thing that is ridiculous about defending traditional marriage is Dave Obey’s position.” Reid said. “The majority of us in the Seventh District support this bill, and come next January we’ll have a congressman who does the same.”

A Republican candidate for the 7th Congressional District says U.S. Rep. Dave Obey, D-Wausau, should expect a fight this time around.

The candidate, Nick Reid, 26, of Rice Lake attended an invitation-only reception Wednesday at the Jefferson Street Inn to energize the Republican base here in Wausau. He was accompanied by former U.S. Attorney General Edwin Meese III to drive home the point that Republicans see an opportunity to unseat the veteran congressman.

Reid, a native of Superior, said he has garnered national support from Republicans, including more than 30 U.S. representatives. He said a competitive governor's race should help to energize his party in District 7, which includes all or parts of 20 counties in north central and northwestern Wisconsin.

He told an audience of about 20 people that Obey breeds an atmosphere of fear about the state of the country and is out of touch with small-business owners and residents who want to remain in the district to raise their families.

Republicans concede, however, that unseating Obey will be an uphill battle.

Obey, 67, had 11 years in office as Wisconsin's 7th District representative the year Reid was born. Obey took office in 1969 and has yet to relinquish the seat.

He was attending a House Appropriation Committee meeting Wednesday and was unavailable for comment.

Obey is thought to have more than $800,000 in his campaign coffers, Reid said. Republicans don't expect to match him dollar for dollar, but they expect to raise significant cash to build name recognition for Reid.

"He needs every possible dollar that you can spare," said Meese, one of former President Ronald Reagan's most trusted advisors.

Meese commended Reid for having the courage to take on the 37-year congressional veteran.

"Nick has many of the qualities that Ronald Reagan exhibited," Meese said. "He has the ability to communicate. He certainly has the integrity."

Reid moved with his wife, Beth, to Washington, D.C., in 2001 to gain public policy experience. He worked for the Heritage Foundation, a Washington-based national think tank, and then as press secretary the past two years for U.S. Rep. Jim Ryun, R-Kansas.

Reid moved back to Wisconsin in October to begin campaigning full time.

"Our campaign is really building a lot of support, not only nationally, but also grassroots," Reid said. "We have a huge opportunity; we just need to capitalize on it."

Mary Roberts and her husband, Lon, of Wausau attended Reid's reception, and the couple wrote a check to his campaign.

"We need to support young candidates, new candidates," Mary Roberts said. "I like his youthful enthusiasm."

Obey won the 2004 election by a landslide after Republican candidate Joe Rothbauer of Bloomer dropped out of the race in July of that year. Obey faced Rothbauer in 2002 and took home 64 percent of the vote.

Reid might first be forced to win a Republican primary election in September before he can square off against Obey in November.

Republican Jeff Tyberg, 37, of Grantsburg remains a candidate in the District 7 race.

Former Reagan administration Attorney General Edwin Meese III was the headline attraction at a fundraiser for Reid in Superior.

Former Reagan Administration Attorney General Ed Meese told an audience in Superior Wednesday that wiretapping incoming foriegn calls in time of war is okay. Danielle Kaeding reports.
Meese supports measures like domestic wiretapping on incoming foreign communications to stop terrorist actions. “This is not only appropriate; it’s absolutely necessary. It’s what the commissions that looked into where we were on 9/11 and what needed to be done to prevent that from happening again. I think they all agreed that we need to do a better job of intelligence, and that’s what the terrorist surveillance program is all about.” But in an interview after his speech, Meese says torture is an unacceptable way to deal with terrorists. “I don’t think so, and I know that our American policy is that torture is not appropriate and we do not engage in torture. I think the treatment…now there are ways that you can treat them less than politely without resorting to torture which may be conducive to persuading them to cooperate and provide information that might lead us to prevent future acts of terrorism.” Meese says we need to keep terrorists at bay including keeping them captive at Guantanamo Bay. “You just can’t let them go or you’re just contributing to the ability of the terrorists to continue their activities.” With polls showing decreasing approval in the republican-run administration, Meese says he’s not too worried about the numbers. “I don’t know of anybody who have been supportive of republicans generally over the last several years that doesn’t want to have the republicans return to office and continue the progress that’s been made.” Meese says approval may increase if they focus on the issues important to Americans. “Republicans need to follow those policies, and I think that together the congress and the presidency would both have much higher numbers if they stook with the principles that Ronald Reagan stood for like lower taxes, limited government, strong national defense.” Meese says even if Democrats regain control of Congress in the November elections, impeaching President Bush won’t happen. “I don’t think there’s any ground for impeachment what-so-ever. I think that’s one of the worries people have is that you have some very irresponsible people on the democratic side, and I think they would only tie up the country in the bitter and acrimonious proceedings for no reason other than political partisanship. So, I would certainly indicate that that’s one reason people would not want to change parties at this time.” Meese was in Superior campaigning for Republican congressional candidate Nick Reid, who is running against Democratic incumbant Congressman Dave Obey.

A Republican Opponent Defers to Ex-Ryun Aide

Nick Reid, the former press secretary to Rep. Jim Ryun (R-Kan.), caught a break in his uphill campaign to oust veteran Rep. David Obey (D): One of the other candidates seeking the GOP nomination has dropped out of the race and endorsed him.

Dave Robinson, a builder of log cabin homes, announced his decision to withdraw earlier this week at the Polk County Republican Lincoln Day dinner.

“If we are going to get the job done and finally bring real representation to the 7th district, we have to do it as a team with one voice united behind the candidate that has the best opportunity to succeed,” Robinson said.

Jeff Tyberg, a Christian missionary, is still interested in seeking the Republican nomination. Whomever emerges from the GOP primary will be a heavy underdog against Obey, who was first elected in 1969.

Check out this post courtesy of Obey Out. It outlines Congressman Obey's feeble defense of his all expenses paid world travels. In this case Mr. Obey took a nearly $6,000 week long trip to Jamaica with his wife in Feburary during a time when he was supposed to be at home and at work in the district. Best yet, he claims it was free from special interest influence. Obey Out does a great job debunking that myth.

It's time for Congressman Obey to get serious about his claims that he wants special interest money out of politics and accept Nick's challenge to voluntarily limit campaign spending in this race. Mr. Obey hasn't responded so far, and based on his special interest trip taking and fundraising (73% of his money came from DC-based special interest groups and lobbyists), we doubt he will.

Dave Obey scares (and misleads) seniors in a stop in Hurley, according to the Ironwood Daily Globe.

Beyond the normal scare tactics Obey uses at seniors' centers across the Seventh District every election year, he said something quite telling:

"Don't assume the fight to preserve Social Security has been won," said Obey. "We won the first round, but there are still many more to go."

What "Obey the obstructionist" was saying is, "I want Social Security to be a political issue so I can scare seniors, therefore, I refuse to do anything to help strengthen Social Security for generations to come."

That's right, quite simply, Dave Obey and his Democrat friends in Congress refused to even sit down and talk about what might be a good Social Security plan to make it strong for generations to come. Dave Obey even stood and applauded during the President's State of the Union speech this year when President Bush said apologetically that we were unable to address the Social Security problem last year. Dave Obey did nothing, and then proudly clapped and cheered about it on national television as precious time slips by when we could be addressing the problems that will come when the Baby Boomers retire soon.

Nick Reid knows that if Social Security is going to be there for his grandparents now AND for younger generations in the future, things have to change. In fact, we all know there is a real problem with Social Security, so it's time we elected a Congressman who is ready to roll up his sleeves and solve it rather than use it solely for political purposes.

Nick's challenge to Obey on campaign financing appeared in today's Roll Call, a newspaper on Capitol Hill. Not surprisingly, Obey refused to comment.

Here's the story:

Nick Reid, a Republican vying to unseat Rep. David Obey (D), has laid down a challenge for his opponent: Put your money where your mouth is.

Obey, a critic of current campaign finance and lobbying practices, is pursuing legislation that would drain all private giving from federal political campaigns.

Responding to the proposal this week, Reid challenged Obey to sign a pledge to limit total spending by his campaign to $500,000.

Reid said in a statement: “Congressman Obey has explained that spending would be financed by taxpayers and capped to give challengers a better chance to run against incumbents. If Mr. Obey signs a pledge to limit his spending, I will abide by it as well, so we can face the voters on the equal footing he is advocating.”

Obey’s office did not respond to a request for comment by press time Wednesday.

Dave Obey is set to introduce a bill calling for public financing of elections. Under the bill, candidates would receive a set amount of public funds, and apparently, could not raise private funds for their campaigns.

Nick today called on Obey to abide by the terms of that bill by limiting his spending to $500,000 and he agreed to do the same.

“If Mr. Obey is really serious about limiting private funding in politics, then I challenge him to begin that process by voluntarily limiting private funding in this year’s election,” said Reid.

According to this American Chronicle article, Dave Obey is still trumpeting his so-called ethics reform bill in Washington. We read the Obey Out post yesterday about Obey receiving Abramoff tribe money and having "no comment" on it back home in Wisconsin.

After 37 years of living and breathing the Washington air, Dave Obey believes it is a good idea offer a piece of legislation with a central tenent of keeping Congressman in Washington more to spend more of our money and be less accountable to us and try to pass it off as reform. It's the type of double-speak that Obey has gotten away with for too long. It's time to elect a Congressman who will be accountable to us and who says what he means and means what he says.

Obey Votes Against Securing Our Borders

Yesterday, Dave Obey voted voted against an amendment in Washington that would have allowed us to contruct fences on our border. Specifically, this amendment, offered by Congressman Hunter (of California and also the Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee) would have provided for building these fences/walls at the most dangerous places.

The official description of the amendment reads: "Fencing has been designated in sectors that have the highest number of immigrant deaths, instances of drug smuggling and illegal border crossings. The amendment includes a requirement for the Secretary of Homeland Security to conduct a study on the use of physical barriers along the Northern border."

This is another vote that is out of touch with the people of Northwest Wisconsin.

Over the past 5 years, Dave Obey has accepted trips from the Aspen Institute to Grand Cayman (twice), Italy (twice), Jamaica, Paris, Mexico, The Bahamas, Vancouver and Puerto Rico as well as three trips within the continental U.S. That's 12 week-long vacations taking Obey all over the world.

Sounds like a pretty good deal, paid for by the Aspen Institute whose board is made up of individuals with interests before Congress.

Obey's Campaign Finance Dilemma

Dave Obey spent a lot of time talking about the influence of special interests when he introduced his new "ethics bill," and he implied that it was a problem caused by Republicans.

So, we want to take a look back at his 2002 and 2004 election cycle fundraising numbers and see how Dave Obey does when it comes to special interest influence.

According to www.opensecrets.org in the last two complete election cycles, Dave Obey raised 61% of his total contributions ($1.32 million) from Washington, DC-based political action committees (special interests).

And, he also raised 80% of his itemized contributions from individuals (i.e. big donors) from people living outside of the State of Wisconsin. The biggest area for individual contributors is Washington, DC ($184,300 over those two cycles). While we didn't look up every DC contributor's occupation, the ones we did look at were lobbyists and lawyers from DC firms that make a living getting earmarks and other provisions into bills moving through Congress.

UPDATE [2:14 pm, 12/7/2005]: Since 1999, Obey has received nearly $2.2 million from political action committees and $272,600 from big donors in DC. That means that Dave Obey received 2/3rds (67%) of his campaign contributions the last 7 years from DC special interests.

Obey Says No Hope for Iraq

It's Monday and the hits keep coming from Dave Obey. According to this online report, Obey complains heavily that President Bush has no strategy for Iraq (ignoring what the President has clearly said the strategy is to secure a freely elected government and to train the Iraqi army and other security forces to police their own country) and even if they did have a strategy, it wouldn't work. (Obey said, "no strategy to get out of Iraq will work.")

Go Nick Go especially appreciated Obey's baseball analogy comparing President Bush to Eddy Stanky, a second baseman for the New York Giants. We think Obey is like a baseball manager who with the bases loaded and two outs in the 9th in game seven of the World Series calls for his left-handed reliever, then before that reliever throws a pitch, the manager comes back out to home plate and tells the umpire that he forfeits the game and turns to his reliever standing on the mound and says, "you would have never gotten this guy out anyway."

Obey's Do Nothing Legislation

Today Dave Obey held a big press conference about a piece of legislation designed to "make it more difficult for lawmakers to sneak provisions into legislation on behalf of special interests" according to this online report by AP courtesy mainichi news.

The four provisions touted are:

"1 The House could not join the Senate in a conference committee on a spending bill unless the Senate clearly identified its changes. This would make it easier to spot any buried special-interest provision, especially in a bill that might total hundreds of pages.

2 The House could not consider legislation unless printed copies were made available at least 24 hours before the vote. The rule only could be waived by a two-thirds majority.

3 It would be a violation of House ethics rules if a lawmaker advocates a special spending provision, called an "earmark," without disclosing that he or she has a financial interest or any control over the entity being funded.

4 Lawmakers could not accept travel or lodging without obtaining assurances from the trip sponsor that lobbyists were not financing the travel or having influence over it."

Point one is largely procedural and would only minimally change the current process.

As for point two, Dave Obey has been in Congress for 36 years. He makes a living putting earmarks in appropriations bills. For 25 years of those 36, Democrats controlled Congress. They railroaded the minority Republicans all the time. They allowed proxy voting in Committees, so that a subcommittee or full committee Chairman (as Obey was at the time) could simply pass or defeat any piece of legislation without any real debate or vote and without the minority having any time (let alone 24 hours) to review it. So, to call for a printed copy of the bill 24 hours in advance is hypocritical. Moreover, Republicans have at least over the years nearly always provided printed copies several hours if not 24 hours in advance.

Point three is already a violation of the House ethics rules which state that official position and confidential information may not be used for personal gain.

Lawmakers can already not accept lobbyist-paid for travel. All this bill would do is allow lawmakers to cover their backsides. It is also something Speaker Hastert proposed earlier this year, while the Democrats were stonwalling the formation of the House ethics committee. Making this idea unoriginal and already acceptable to Republicans.

This bill is basically just a PR stunt by Obey and the Democrats that offers very little of actual substance.

Obey's Tactics

Obey Out has posted about Congressman Obey's current efforts to scare college students. We particularly appreciated them asking this question:

". . . why don't you tell families that you voted against virtually all tax relief they've received since you've been in Congress and that you've voted for all their tax increases since you've been in Congress?"

That question lead to the logical conclusion that if Dave Obey had his way, families having a child after 2001 would be paying at least $1500 more every year in taxes because he voted against the 2001 and 2003 tax relief. If you took just $1000 of that and put it in a simple CD that earned 3% interest as a college fund that earned just for your child each year, it would be worth nearly $30,000 to help pay for college.

It's really a philosophical question, should Congressman Obey take more of your money and spend it how he sees fit or should you keep more of your hard-earned money to spend and save for your family?

Thanksgiving has always been a special time for the Reid family. Each year I look forward to spending time in the great outdoors with my father, grandfather, and two brothers as we each set out to bag that 'big buck' we have all spotted roaming our family land in the Douglas County Northwoods. But for our family, the hunt always began months before opening day ever came around. My father taught us that in order to be successful, you had to put in the time and effort long before the season began. And, it was because of our early preparation and dedication that each year we had a successful hunt.

This principle of early preparation and dedicated hard work apply to more than just the hunting season. That is why I have already been hard at work for months to prepare for a successful election season that is still almost a year away. In fact, over the past few months, we have worked to earn early support across the district and across the nation.

As of today we have nearly 500 "Friends of Nick Reid" who have contributed or signed on as volunteers. This support network has allowed us to make thousands of phone calls and written thousands of letters to households in the District, hold Friends of Nick Reid events in 16 of the 20 counties in the district, gave us a presence in both the Apple Festival and Cranberry Festival Parades, allowed me to speak at at four major Fall and Reagan Day dinners, and much, much more.

So this Thanksgiving, I want you to rest assured knowing that we are hard at work to give families in Northwest Wisconsin one more thing to be thankful for next Thanksgiving.

Parental Rights Removed by Activist Judges

Go Nick Go condemns 9th Circuit Appeals Court ruling (AP story found here) removing the rights of parents in sex education classes in schools. It's another outrageous example of the most activist court in the country trampling on the Constitution.

From the decision:

"…parents have no due process or privacy right to override the determinations of public schools as to the information to which their children will be exposed while enrolled as students."

"there is no fundamental right of parents to be the exclusive provider of information regarding sexual matters to their children…"

"no such specific right can be found in the deep roots of the nation's history and tradition or implied in the concept of ordered liberty."
